Why is it important for the graphic designer to consult the printing company from the very first steps?
A good design alone is not yet a guarantee of a premium appearance. Whether it is an exclusive wine label, an elegant brochure or custom packaging, the quality of the final result depends greatly on print production – and on how closely the Client’s graphic designer works with the printing company already in the initial stages of the design process.
In the points below, we show why this consultation is essential – especially when the aim is a high-quality, premium printed product.
- File format, bleed, CMYK – errors can be prevented
Print files are subject to strict technical requirements: CMYK colour mode, Pantone colour codes, trim marks, bleed and correctly embedded fonts. Artwork that has not been prepared properly may result in reprints or compromise solutions. If the graphic designer consults the printing company in time, these errors can easily be avoided.
- Knowledge of technical limitations and possibilities
Every printing company operates with its own machinery and production technologies, which define the physical limits of printing – for example maximum size, colour gamut, substrate range or binding options. If the graphic designer is not aware of these, a design may be created that later needs to be modified – resulting in a loss of time, energy and money.
- Cost efficiency and optimisation
A good printing company does not only carry out production, but also provides advice: for example, on how a particular design can be produced more cost-effectively, or which paper type, layout or print run would be ideal. These considerations can already influence the final result at the design stage.
- Time savings and smooth production
Continuous communication between the graphic designer and the printing company ensures that there are fewer rejected or corrected files and that the production process can proceed more quickly. With properly prepared artwork, the printing company can work more efficiently, and the Client receives the finished product sooner.
- Premium effect only with premium technology
A striking raised UV varnish, foil stamping or embossing will only achieve its full effect if the graphic design is adapted accordingly. The printing company works with precise technical parameters: for example, where UV varnish or gold foil can be applied and in what thickness. If these aspects are not reflected in the design – or not correctly – the special effect will not be effective and may even be technically unfeasible.
And finally, last but not least:
- Faster, smoother production
With materials agreed in advance, the printing company can work smoothly and without errors. Meeting deadlines, accurate delivery and customer satisfaction all depend on whether the technical consultation has taken place at the very first stages.
Summary
Printed materials – whether a simple flyer or luxury packaging – are the result of the joint work of the designer and the printing company. If the goal is premium quality, a distinctive appearance and flawless production, it is not enough for the graphic designer to think creatively – they must also collaborate with the printing company from a technical perspective. A single phone call or brief consultation at the beginning of the design process can save time, costs and ensure higher quality in the long term.
